thierry.burckhart@global-hydro.euThe Gabi hydropower plant demonstrates how a comprehensive modernization can significantly increase the performance and flexibility of an existing hydropower facility. Originally commissioned in 1957, the plant underwent a complete refurbishment, replacing the former turbine units with two modern vertical 5-jet Pelton turbines and increasing annual generation by approximately 15–20%.
Global Hydro delivered the turbine-generator units and associated equipment, with the project requiring exceptionally high standards in engineering, manufacturing and documentation. A key technical feature was the custom development of a high-speed jet deflector for reliable island operation, achieving a closing time of just 0.218 seconds. Through tailored engineering, precise manufacturing and on-site installation, Global Hydro contributed to transforming Gabi into a modern, efficient and flexible hydropower plant designed for reliable long-term operation.
